Marvin Zelen Memorial Symposium 2019 참석 후기

 하버드 생물통계학과에 재직하셨고 Clinical cancer trial 분야에 큰 업적을 남기신 Marvin Zelen 교수님을 기리고자 생긴 Marvin Zelen Memorial Symposium. 이번 행사에서는 Data science in biomedical research: learning from other disciplines라는 주제로 행사가 진행되었다.

 나는 이번 Symposium 참석이 처음이었는데, 엄청나게 유명한 교수님들이 한데 다 모이셨다. MIT EECS에서 거의 유일하게 통계를 담당하시는 Tamara 교수님, Bayesian의 대가 Andrew 교수님 등 책으로만 보던 교수님들을 직접 볼 수 있었다.

행사의 시작. Marvin Zelen 교수님의 업적은 Civil Action이라는 책과 영화로도 널리 알려져 있다.
하버드 생물통계학과에서는 일 년에 한 번씩은 꼭 Civil Action영화를 보는 듯..

다양한 행사의 강연 중에서는 Atul Butte교수님의 강연이 가장 기억에 남는다.

 - 서부에 계신 교수님이라 그런가, 좋은 아이디어가 있으면 창업을 하라고 하신다.

 - You don`t have to start with patient data and start your experiment -> Use open repositary

 - NASA-astronomer problem: Many places to explore, few astronomers to work on

 - 10명의 patient를 살리기 위한 약을 만들 회사가 있을까?: Algorithm으로 약을 찾는다.

그리고 iRobot에서 일하는 Brandon Rohrer 박사님의 강연도 기억이 남는다. 특히 data science를 세 분야로 나누었다. 

- data analysis/data modeling/data engineering

- supervised learning, unsupervised learning(grouping, clustering), custom algorithm development

- Don`t be a diva: Do data cleaning: generalist/diva/detective/oracle/maker

- Data scientist archetypes

 -> generalist (proficient at everything), detective, oracle, maker: 이런 것 중 하나를 정해야 할 것이다. Ignore job titles: Look at the skills: Look at the underlying skills that are being asked for: 

그리고 제안하신 Challenges for the future of Biostatistics

 세 번째 연사로는 Mark Hansen 컬럼비아 교수님의 가짜 트위터 골라내기 프로젝트를 보여주셨다. 엄청나게 신기했다...

 그 후로는 Tamara 교수님이 하는 연구(Cross validation을 taylor expansion을 통해서 computation을 가볍게 하는것), Andrew Gelman 교수님의 즉흥(?) 강연이 있었다. 생각보다는 음... 그리고는 Jeff Leek 교수님의 cool한 강연이 있었다. Jeff 교수님의 연구 는 여기서 찾아볼 수 있다.

엄청나게 유명한 교수님들을 한 자리에서 볼 수 있어서 대단한 영광이었다. 그리고 자신의 연구분야에 전문성을 갖는 건 참으로 멋있는 일인 것 같다.
